Foo Fighters play surprise gig for funk icon's birthday

The Foo Fighters have a new album in the works, but that's not what they were thinking about during a surprise gig in Washington D.C.

Dave Grohl and company played a career-spanning set Monday at the 9:30 Club as part of a birthday party for local funk icon Big Tony.  Grohl said in a video tribute to Tony that he opened for his band Trouble Funk when he was just a teenager, and every time he sees them play he's inspired to discover more music and play as well as he can.

That wasn't the only reminiscing Grohl did that evening.  The DC-area native also teamed up with his pre-Nirvana bandmate Peter Stahl and members of Bad Brains to form a one-night-only supergroup known as the Don't Need Its.
